Ray Abell review at PFAC

Victoria Racimo writes: they have a wonderful exhibition of Newport News artist Ray Abell. He works with a variety of media: acrylics, graphite, pastels. His pictures build without “muddying the painting’s foundation.” His work is eye-opening and displays a very sure hand. He says, “The intention of my paintings is to let the viewer come close to the objects to the point where they reach inside their unconscious, triggering their feelings and leading to a greater awareness.”His pictures draw you in and allow you to connect with other images in your psyche or visual experience without directly appearing as reminiscent of other works. For example, one painting, in abstraction, using acrylic and water media, immediately jumped out at me, mysteriously conjuring Ansel Adams’ memorable photo of a moon over a cemetery and lonely town in New Mexico – I think it’s called “Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico.” Abell’s picture bore no real physical resemblance to Adams’ picture but the essence for me was visceral. I was glad to see a red “sold” dot beside it – would that I had been there sooner. Keep your eye on this fellow – he’s a comer.
